Hintergrundinformation

The Horn of Africa region is one of the world's poorest regions and the highest recipient of international aid, particularly for Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan. Conflict and instability remain endemic in some countries, impacted by demographic growth, migration, youth unemployment, lack of access to services, competition for scarce natural resources, and harsh climatic conditions, with increasingly frequent and severe droughts and floods. By supporting IGAD and governments of the region in the implementation of crucial components of the IGAD Peace and Security Strategy 2016-2020 and the follow up Strategy, and by building on strong regional leadership, IGAD will be better equipped to fulfil its mandate of contributing to the peace and security and economic integration and development in the region.
