Projektziel


The Kofi Annan Award for Innovation in Africa (KAAIA) 2021 focuses on supporting projects by Africa-based start-up companies that offer innovative solutions to achieve SDG 3 ("Health and Wellbeing"). The Award was launched by the Austrian Federal Chancellery (BKA) in cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP), the Kofi Annan Foundation and the Austrian Development Agency. The applicant and its project proposal were selected by a high-class jury of international experts as one of the three Awardees of the Kofi Annan Award 2021 and will be funded with a maximum amount of € 250,000.

The applicant is a young company established in Zimbabwe in 2020. Its primary purpose is to leverage digital platforms to promote global health security. Vaxiglobal's team intends to leverage biometric identification to deliver Covid-19 vaccines in five marginalized communities in the Mashonaland Central, province of Zimbabwe. Through their solution, digital Covid-19 vaccination records will be created for around 350,000 individuals and it will provide verifiable vaccine delivery records. Vaxiglobal will provide the frontline workers with the equipment and training to ensure the correct collection of biometric and vaccination data in their platform.


Erwartete Ergebnisse


350 000 individuals (210.000 women, 140.000 men) in Mashonaland Central will receive the correct number of Covid-19 vaccine doses and have electronic vaccination records that are tied to their facial biometrics. This represents 55% of the eligible population. The baseline is 30,2%.

5 healthcare centres in Mashonaland Central will have enhanced capacity to deliver quality healthcare. 250 laboratories across the country will have enhanced capacity to deliver a better experience for their traveling customers. 23 full time jobs will be created (15 women, 8 men).

 


Zielgruppe


The projects addresses one of the most marginalized provinces of Mashonaland Central in Zimbabwe with 5 immunization sites. Beneficiaries are residents of this district which is one of the most marginalized with one of the lowest immunization coverage in the country.

 


Maßnahmen


The team will refine its app as well as the integration of the Vaxiglobal data collection platform and the Simprint biometrics system. There will also be training sessions for healthcare professionals for a smart use of the app. The community will be sensitized on the use of facial biometrics through community awareness trainings and awareness campaigns. Finally, a biometric identity for every individual who has received the vaccine will be created and linked to their vaccination records.


Hintergrundinformation


Through a Pan-African Call for Proposals, nine young companies were selected for an intensive five-day virtual boot camp training and business coaching provided by the WFP Innovation Accelerator. The applicant and its project proposal were selected by a high class jury of international experts as one of the three Awardees of the Kofi Annan Award 2021 and will be funded with a maximum amount of € 250,000. In addition to the funding, the Awardees will receive support from WFP during the implementation of their projects for one year with monthly meetings and several workshops.
