Projektziel

Project objective:

The objective of the project is to contribute to poverty reduction of the rural population in Western Serbia severely affected by floods.

Erwartete Ergebnisse

Results:

- The socio-economic status of at least 100 small rural households in Šabac is improved and the capacities of small agricultural households are increased.

- 50-70% income of farmers is increased as compared to sale of primary products.

- A Social cooperative is formed and in operation.

- Material support for the social cooperative is provided.

- Awareness is raised through advocacy activities on organic agriculture, the legal situation of cooperatives and land grabbing in Serbia.

The target group includes 100 small agricultural households severely affected by the May 2014 floods, whose solely source of income is based on traditional agricultural production of fruit and vegetables. The average household in Serbia comprises 3 members. Therefore the expected number of direct beneficiaries amounts to 300 persons. In addition, 72 volunteers will be engaged in the project to support transportation of the mobile dryers and dried fruits during the project period. At least 5000 people will be reached through advocacy activities and familiarized with the concepts of organic farming, cooperatives and the issue of land grabbing. The overall community that will have access to dried fruits and vegetables from the established social cooperative will benefit as well. The project particularly targets ‘elderly households’ that are present in great numbers in all Serbian villages, especially the ones in Western Serbia.

The project region is Šabac.

Maßnahmen

Activities:

100 small farmers are selected. Agricultural experts will be engaged to prepare a curriculum. Subsequently agricultural seminars and trainings on the specificities of agricultural production will be held. The training will provide farmers with information regarding innovations and new techniques of production, principles of organic production and the use of natural fertilizers, and agricultural production after the floods, taking into account ecological approach to agriculture that views agricultural areas as ecosystems and is concerned with the ecological impact of agricultural practices. Seminars on business skills will be provided, where participants draft business plans. Finally a social cooperative will be formed. At least 20 participants of the seminars will be selected and involved in the social cooperative as subcontractors.

Members of the social cooperative will visit Austria to liaise with other CSOs.

1000 brochures will be designed and printed and a social media campaign organized.

Two conferences will be held, one in Šabac and one in Belgrade.

Background:

The situation regarding agricultural production in Šabac was strongly affected by the catastrophic floods in May 2014. Šabac is located in the region of Western Serbia that was severely hit by the floods.
