Projektziel
By providing low cost and high-quality (equipment for) protheses, the Special Fund for the Disabled (SFD) of the International Comittee of the Red Cross (ICRC) provides quality services to low-income mine victims and disabled people.
The key issues which the SFD 2009 plan of action aims to address are:
1. Acess to physical rehabilitation services for disabled persons:
In addition to its training program in Ethiopia, in 2009 the SFD continues to provide both material and financial assistance to some 8,000 amputees and other physically disabled through some 31 other centers in 15 African countries: Benin (1 centre), Cameroon (1), Guinea-Bissau (1), Kenya (2), Madagascar (1), Malawi (2), Mali (7), Mauritania (1), Morocco (2), Nigeria (2), Somalia (3), Tanzania (2), Togo (2), Zambia (2) and Zimbabwe (3).
2. Quality of services to patients:
In 2009, the SFD continues to organize advanced one-month refresher courses in prosthetic technology and physiotherapy for some 72 participants at its Regional Training Centre in Addis Ababa. The SFD also continues to perform a systematic follow-up of patients receiving services at the sponsored centres.
3. Long-term functioning of physical rehabilitation centers:
In 2009, the SFD will start to assess the impact of previous management training offered to its partner organizations.
By means of this contribution, Austria will provide approx. 12-13% of the SFD total annual 2009 budget for Africa. The desired impact of this support is to contribute to the socio-economic integration of persons with disabilities through mobility restoration with a prostehses or orthoses.
