This project is funded 100% by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW) under the Food Aid Convention.


The aim of the project is to provide maize seed for spring planting to a minimum 100,000 (maximum173,000 ) beneficiaries in those rayons of Moldau worst affected by the drought of 2007. According to the results of the joint FAO/WFP crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission, fielded in August 2007, the maize crop was the most seriously affected by the drought, with yields reduced by an average of 81%.


The main objective of this project is to improve the food security situation of the drought-affected households in the most affected rayons of Central, Southern, Northern, Gagauzia and Transnistria regions of Moldova by ensuring the planting of maize, in the spring 2008 season. Through the project, minimum 100,000 (maximum173,000) small-scale households in the most affected rayons of Central, Southern, Northern, Gagauzia and Transnistria regions of Moldova will be able to plant 0.5 ha of maize on time, with good quality seed, thereby improving their food security situation.


The overall coordination of the UN drought response and of this project rests with UNDP Moldova as the only UN organization holding a permanent presence in the country. The project activities under the Austrian contribution are implemented by FAO as the relevant, sector-specific UN agency.
